Understanding Green Hydrogen: Powering the Future with Clean Energy

What Is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas produced using renewable electricity typically from sources like wind, solar, or hydro without emitting greenhouse gases. Unlike grey hydrogen (from fossil fuels) or blue hydrogen (from fossil fuels with carbon capture), green hydrogen is entirely carbon-free. It represents the most sustainable form of hydrogen and plays a critical role in the global transition to clean energy.

How Is Green Hydrogen Produced?

Green hydrogen is produced through a process called electrolysis, which uses electricity from renewable sources (like solar or wind) to split water (H₂O) into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂).The device used is called an electrolyzer.

What makes this process green is that the electricity used comes from zero-emission sources, and the only byproduct is oxygen, making it a clean and sustainable way to generate hydrogen fuel.

This hydrogen can then be stored, transported, or used directly in fuel cells to generate electricity, power vehicles, or support industrial processes.

Why Green Hydrogen Matters

Green hydrogen goes beyond simply being a clean fuel it is a game changer in the fight against climate change. It holds the potential to decarbonize sectors that cannot be easily electrified, store renewable energy efficiently, and fuel a circular, green economy. Hydrogen fuel cells can power trucks, buses, trains, ships, and even planes offering faster refueling, longer range, and reduced downtime compared to batteries.This makes green hydrogen essential for the decarbonization of global transport logistics and infrastructure.

Energy Storage and Grid Reliability

One of the biggest challenges with renewable energy is intermittency solar and wind aren’t always available. Green hydrogen allows excess electricity generated during peak times to be stored as hydrogen and reconverted into power when needed. Countries rich in renewables can produce and export hydrogen or its derivatives (like ammonia), opening new revenue streams and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. For example, Kenya with its rich solar and wind resources could become a leading exporter of green hydrogen in the region.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Despite its potential, green hydrogen is still an emerging technology.

Need for supportive policies

However, advancements in electrolyzer efficiency, falling renewable energy costs, and strong global interest are rapidly improving the economics. Strategic investments and innovation will be key to unlocking the full potential of green hydrogen.
