Understanding Solar Financing Options in Kenya

Making Solar More Accessible for Homes, Businesses and institutions

As Kenya continues to embrace clean energy, solar power is becoming a preferred choice for homes, businesses, and public institutions. But while interest in solar grows, many potential users face one key barrier: the cost of installation.

That’s where solar financing comes in.

Common Solar Financing Options in Kenya

 Cash Purchase

This is the most straightforward option. The customer pays for the solar system in full (or progressively in agreed milestones) and owns the system outright.

Best for: Customers who want full control, no monthly obligations, and the highest long-term savings.

 Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

Under a PPA, a third-party investor pays for the system installation and maintenance. The customer provides a rooftop or space and agrees to buy the electricity generated at a set price usually cheaper than the utility provider’s rates.

At the end of the contract (typically 10–20 years), the customer can:

  • Buy the system at a reduced price
  • Renew the agreement
  • Or request removal

Best for: Institutions or businesses with high energy consumption but limited upfront capital.

  Solar Leasing (Rent-to-Own)

In this model, the customer leases the solar equipment and makes monthly payments over a period (7–10 years). At the end of the lease, ownership of the system transfers to the customer.

Best for: Households and SMEs looking for gradual ownership without large upfront investment.

  Green Loans

Some Kenyan banks and SACCOs offer green or clean energy loans for individuals or businesses to install solar systems. These loans come with flexible terms, and sometimes lower interest rates.

Best for: Clients with a steady income who want to finance solar independently and own it from day one.

  Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG)

Mostly used for small home solar systems in rural and off-grid areas, PAYG allows customers to pay in daily or weekly instalments via mobile money (like M-Pesa). Providers often remotely activate or deactivate the system based on payments.

Best for: Households in off-grid areas looking for affordable lighting, phone charging, and small appliances.
